Presenter: Robert Scuka, Ph.D., M.S.W., LCSW-C
Friday, April 5, 2:00 – 5:15 p.m. 3 CE Credits
Helping clients disentangle themselves from unproductive thought patterns frequently becomes one of the therapist’s prime tools to help clients make progress in their individual or joint therapy work. It is well established that thoughts influence emotions (and vice versa), often is ways that create unnecessary internal emotional distress and/or create more complicated interpersonal difficulties. This workshop will introduce a simple but highly effective way of helping clients begin to distance themselves from their unhelpful thought patterns in order to help alleviate internal emotional distress and/or difficult interpersonal dynamics. This approach will be illustrated with two case examples.
In addition, this workshop will present several other challenging cases from within Relationship Enhancement Therapy in order to examine the clients’ use of the RE dialogue process and the therapist’s interventions at various points in their therapeutic work. Particular attention will be given to the use of Therapist Becoming to deepen and clarify the Expresser’s experience and the use of Therapist Troubleshooting to clarify and sharpen an issue in order to advance the clients’ engagement of their issue.
Workshop participants are encouraged to bring their own challenging cases for discussion and peer feedback regarding potentially helpful strategies for dealing with those cases. Challenging cases with successful outcomes that illustrate the use of RE Therapy techniques also are welcome.
Workshop Objectives: Participants completing this workshop will be able to:
- Conceptualize with greater clarity some of the clinical challenges they encounter in their own clinical work and make more skillful choices about how to deal with them effectively
2. Describe how to use “Don’t Believe Everything You Think” to help clients disentangle themselves from unproductive thought patterns
3. Describe how to use the advanced RE therapist skills of Becoming and Therapist Troubleshooting with greater effectiveness
